Rethink Steering Wheel Design?

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

Let me just start by saying design is subjective.

I hope the steering wheel design is not final. I think a round wheel or a round wheel with flat bottom would be preferred by most folks. From a design pov, don't like the two spoke design either. I know its a throwback look but in combination with the shape of the wheel not aesthetically pleasing. Somehow makes me think of my dad's old Buick.

Needs a HUD, Dashcams with Telephoto, external side cameras (like Rivian or Tesla) with HDR and 4K, Adaptive Driving Beams, and a sunglasses holder to replace the compass. Good Connectivity with Parking 'Sentry' mode and cloud storage as well as Dashcam Cloud Storage and remote storage and live access from anywhere in the world and interior problems are solved. The Compass I'm sure Scout wants to make "Iconic" but after the initial Gee Whiz, its useless and duplicated in the mirror and screens and your phone and watch. A sunglasses holder would never break down or leak (like the compass might) and would be far more useful whenever the sun shines. Oh, digital rearview mirror too.

The steering wheel is the one thing, besides the buttons and screens, that I think are fine. Then again, I haven't driven it.

If the Towing Capacity was only not crippled by the Harvester..........

I love that compass. It needs something iconic. There’s got to be other places where they could put something for our sunglasses. In fact, at Nats I spoke with one of the designers and specifically asked for a place to hold sunglasses and I know it’s been mentioned on here before. Sorry, but I love that compass. It gives the interior character. Please don’t take it away.

I agree wholeheartedly, the analog Compass stays! Would not feel like a Scout without it.

I suppose if my Watch, iPhone, Secondary Android and the truck itself are dead and I'm lost and can't look up at the Sun to figure out which way is East or West or North or South, then I'll be glad I have that Compass. Otherwise, everyone that gets in will say, "Oh, a Compass" and I'll complain that it replaced my sunglasses holder and the rear mirror I use to look at my Grand Daughter in the back seat, as we've had in every Honda for 20 years.

I know they are reaching for something Iconic, but I'd rather have useful stuff than a show piece. I mean, we could put a hood ornament Compass on the front of the hood that retracts when we want to go off road.

I'll get off my soapbox but I don't see its utility.

    But it looks cool! 🤣
(And I’m sure it goes to 11)

The compass was the first image SM showed. I want sunglasses holder(s) but not a chance that compass is removed. It is perfectly fine there and sure it’s a novelty but it’s a character item that the large majority all loves

I look at it like the analog clock that Lexus puts in the majority of its vehicles or the bud base in the VW beetle. It’s just a cool item and a talking point and to me that’s a signature point of SM vehicles. Ever try to read an analog clock in the middle of your dash when driving in heavy traffic. It’s not easy and it’s dangerous but again-it’s a feature people know. Not everyone has to be functional or practical.

I’d be fine with it on the Dashboard. Behind or in front of the rail.

I’m looking forward to using the rail system with USB C ports.

I just think the overhead space is a premium and hunting for sunglasses while damaging them in the center console makes no sense.

I think my last 5 vehicles have had the sunglasses holder. Not once have I used it. I’d rather have the compass.
I have never had a sunglasses holder in a vehicle. I remember years ago having one of those clips you put on your visor that held them. Not ideal. Having seen the Scouts in person, there’s plenty of room for both. But I have to say I prefer the compass where it is.

I agree. Sunglass holder is not something I use. I have an area near the door leading to the garage where I grab a fob or key for whatever I am about to drive and my sunglasses. No need to try and remember which vehicle you left them in. I have a similar area with a copy of the same sunglasses at the front door for when I am going out walking the dogs. One thing my wife does do is purchase a cheap pair to through in the glovebox for passengers that may need them.
