I kind of want to take one of the vintage Scouts on a cross country road trip this year. Good idea or bad idea?
I’ve thought out none of the logistics, the thought just popped into my head. Lol.
That would be really cool! You could use this as a suggestion list. I bought this book awhile back on eBay and thought it would be awesome to explore some of these locations.
Have you ever driven across country?I kind of want to take one of the vintage Scouts on a cross country road trip this year. Good idea or bad idea?I’ve thought out none of the logistics, the thought just popped into my head. Lol.
I can think of all kinds of issues but at your age and flexibility in your family business I say do it. My parents weren’t the type to let me do that when I was young and I was a bit of a nervous travel as we did very little growing up. Now my daughter is talking about going to Japan for a year after college to teach English and my wife and I are encouraging it-enjoy life while you are young and have no responsibilities. Oh-and take you girlfriend so you have company and a sacrifice if things end up going southI kind of want to take one of the vintage Scouts on a cross country road trip this year. I think timing is important too. Moving for work is one thing-traveling for 5-6 weeks (or more). Heading east you’d want to look at annual weather patterns and which seasons you want to see some places as well as avoiding winter-ish time frames as you have two sets of mountain chains to contend with. And I’ll go one step further. Without asking @OleScout first-you get to souther PA / Maryland and the two of us will join you and take you out for a bourbon and dinnerHave you ever driven across country?
There’s two guys who have a YouTube channel. Gears and Gasoline. I just posted their newest trip yesterday. They tend to take older vehicles on long trips and invariably have an issue or many issues. And some of the trips one car will be older with a new engine swap and they will still have issues. Might be worth a watch.
We drove 1995 miles from California to Illinois when we moved and went out to visit family in the Supra so that was 4400 miles round trip.
The 1995 mile trip the Wrangler had a nail in the tire just as we were getting ready to leave. Like house was empty. Car full of cats and dogs. Needed to go. Had Goodyear put the full size spare on and prayed the whole way we didn’t get a flat because the spare was flat.
The 4400 mile trip the Supra did great but we went through torrential rain in Oklahoma and it basically water blasted the whole front of the Supra with all the dirt from the road. So bad the whole front of the car had fine little pits in the paint, headlights, and mirror caps. Even took a chunk out of the PPF. $13,000 insurance claim to get the car back to where she should be.
Not saying don’t. Just saying prepare for the unknown.
I have to be a mom for a minute. Make sure you have AAA, the $100 membership that comes with 100 miles of free towing. Also they have a free service called a Trip Tik. You go in and tell them where you are going. They help plan your trip and where you want to stop and it’s a book with directions, which you really don’t need these days, but it lists all the hotels and things to do in the area you are going to stop. That’s how I found the restaurant inside of an old airplane in Colorado Springs.I think timing is important too. Moving for work is one thing-traveling for 5-6 weeks (or more). It’s the 100th anniversary of Route 66 and it runs right through my town. Just saying Colton.I think it could be a really great experience. You could film it for your YouTube channel.
Have you ever watched Derek Bieri from Vice Grip Garage? He always goes and gets old vehicles running and drives them home usually several hundred miles, often breaking down and fixing the vehicle on the side of the road. He even did a video a few years ago with an old diesel Scout.
I also like @J Alynn idea of meeting up with other forum members on your trip. You could see how many members you could meet along the way, and take pictures or videos with your Scout alongside other members old Scouts that have one. Lots of possibilities to contemplate.
100% agree. Our cars are rarely over 4 years old but we always carry AAA. Just nice as a back-up insurance plan. Never knew they had the trip planner-will need to check that outI have to be a mom for a minute. Make sure you have AAA, the $100 membership that comes with 100 miles of free towing. It was a refueling jet. The dummy was there to show how they would refuel the plains. The food wasn’t amazing but you could sit in the cockpit.

Great idea. And if you are nice-imagine how many free meals you might be able to land. If you tune up my furnace while in PA I’ll put you up for a night in the guest room for free. If it’s summer we have the pool. People say I’m a good cook so getting to see your scout parked in my drive for a day and a quick tune up and I’ll make it worth your whileI think it could be a really great experience. You could film it for your YouTube channel.

It takes them a day or two to print them up but it’s a nice little book. I saved mine from our last trip.100% agree. Our cars are rarely over 4 years old but we always carry AAA. Just nice as a back-up insurance plan. Never knew they had the trip planner-will need to check that out

Bring your scout and your HVAC certification then yes. As for the sleepover at some point my wife may find that intrusive but what the hell-it’s my house too and I keep the firearm in our bedroom so I’d feel safe enoughHey are we all invited?
I think that sounds like a great idea!Last year, my wife tossed out the idea of us driving my '66 Scout along Rt 66 when I'm age 66 (in 2028). Love the idea but we'll have to see.Would def need to put some drive-ability $ into the Scout. Probably would drive out and have it shipped back.
Or maybe we could just drive a Harvester on the reverse trip. Whatya say, @Jamie@ScoutMotors?!![]()

Do you have hagerty insurance on it? My Ford has Hagerty best coverage ever. Free towing for first 100miles. gas delivery, of 3 gallons free, then any extra you have to pay. And they will deliver any other fluid you need. I haven’t had to use any thank god. But I always know it there. And besides that, they know more about my truck than a AAA guy would. Because its a Classic car only company.I kind of want to take one of the vintage Scouts on a cross country road trip this year.
