Towing with an EV - Rivian R1S Style

I didn’t watch the full video, but I’ve done a bit of towing with my R1S. I tow a 4,500 lb travel trailer. The power and weight of the R1S make towing really easy. I don’t really even feel the trailer behind me. That’s the good.

The not so good is that I only get about 1 mile/kwh at 60 mph. If I go up to 65, that drops about 10%. If I slow down to 55, efficiency improves by about 10%. This limits me to about 115 miles (if I want some margin) without having to stop and charge. Given the size and power of the Scout, my guess is we will see the Scout be comparable to the Rivian in performance and range.

This is fine for me, since my trailer trips are typically within a couple hours of my house, weekend type trips. If I planned on towing a lot, with long distance trips, I am not sure I would get an EV. The harvester is intriguing, but not if it comes with a big hit in towing capacity.

Would be a good data point to reference battery size for those that don't watch the video too. TFL gets a little "sensationalist" for clicks.

For reference, my battery is 130 kwh. When I said 115 miles of range when towing, I had some margin, as I don’t like to push it to the minimum.

One thing I’ll point out. I have had good luck with being able to charge at campsites. This is very convenient, and it’s free. I am not sure if the campgrounds will catch on to this at some point, but it’s very nice for now.

When you say free, are saying you just pull up and connect or are you renting a camp site and using the hop-up at said spot? Just curious. As a teen I worked at a campground so I am maybe thinking something completely different

I have been able to charge via the outlet at the camp site that would also power a trailer. I use the travel charger for my Rivian and get 220v/30 amps. They have not charged me for this, but I am waiting to pull in someday and be told I can’t do it anymore.

So you rent a space but don’t pay full hook up and since you don’t have a trailer they don’t give it a second thought? I like this idea just wrapping my head around it.

I rent the space and pay for it in full. I don’t think I am doing anything I shouldn’t be doing.

My thought is that they typically are providing electricity for a trailer, and they are not to trying to fill a 130kwh battery.

That’s about $40 of electricity if I charge at home or $60-70 at a high speed charger. My guess is they don’t like providing that without me paying extra for it, and at some point there will be a policy against it.
