Tarrifs on Canada. Would you still buy?

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

If a tarrif is applied on Canadian steel imports and then you expect to sell an American car made with American steel for the same price in Canada? This won't happen because Canada will impose tarrifs on American cars. If this is what people want to not care about Canadian market, that's a different thing but we in Canada are looking at a higher cost if this continues.
I was just talking about steel in General. I forgot this was mainly about Canada. Maybe pick a different leader that will work with the United States, that will do what the canadians want. And not what they feel is right like what Justin has been doing. I keep up with my world politics.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Scout opens up a second plant in Mexico, so the international market is covered… but let’s just see what happens. A lot will change in the next 2-3 months.

They got 1.3 billion in incentives to build in South Carolina, and haven't tapped any percentage of it's capacity yet.

The only thing that would drive another plant would be somehow being unable to meet demand.

They have to build one first.

They have enough land and are master planned to nearly double the current plant so they are covered and that keeps them as a U.S. made product which is a win. I will not buy a car model made in Mexico. Know a lot of techs who have said over the years that cars built to the south have way more issues. Maybe that has improved but still stand by that input

We already have a free trade agreement with the United States. We've had free trade without tariffing each other for half a century now. Our leaders always try to work with the United States regardless of which party is in power on either side of the border. But when our closest ally and neighbour unilaterally decides to ignore our trade agreements and slap tariffs on our goods for no reason then yeah, we're going to retaliate because clearly US leadership cannot be trusted and the agreements we have in place apparently aren't worth the paper they're written on.

The "world politics" as we see it if our closest ally now threatening to annex us. We aren't the ones that need a change in leadership. Our leadership will look out for Canadian interests now more than ever since it is increasingly clear we cannot trust a thing the new US regime says.

As of now the Exec Order stipulates reciprocal tariffs. So the lower the tariffs the US pays then we would lower tariffs too. I believe as others have said depending on who is voted PM, a more unified/beneficial economy would benefit both countries especially against China.

Japan and now possibly India might be getting excepted or lower tariffs on Steel and Aluminum..

But also ScoutMotors is so close to NUCOR steel in NC. So it would ultimately make sense to use them for Steel and theirs even Aluminum manufacturers in SC and NC. There are options in the US. Doesn’t make sense to use other countries when we make it too. And without Child Slave Labor.
I thought NUCORs panels weren't good for bodywork because they had long grain crystals from using recycled inputs? Great steel for frames/rebar/etc, but not for a painted car body as I understood it when i used to work with them.

We will not be extorted into voting for a PM that the US approves of.

We ALREADY HAVE A UNIFIED ECONOMY. There were no tariffs until the tangerine tyrant slapped them on for NO REASON!

This whole situation is purely unprovoked aggression from the United States towards Canada. If your government doesn't want reciprocal tariffs then it should honour the existing trade agreements that Trump himself signed in his first term!

Also, tariffs are a tax on yourselves. The only tariffs the US pays are the ones it puts on other countries. So if you want to stop paying tariffs then tell your government to stop slapping tariffs on to stuff.

Currently they are only planning for US and Canada. No international planned at this time
Slight correction. Canada would be considered international I believe. We're not the 51'st state yet but I realize that's not where you are coming from and this is often how many on both sides of the border think as that's how intertwined we've been. We should be doing more, not less, to advance the most enviable relationship in the entire world between these 2 countries. So much easier to tear down than to build up...

Canada is tied as my second favorite country (with Italy) next to US but at the rate we are going I may hold out for my Scout then head north and beg you guys to let me in ?

Whatever happens, let’s say in two years we meet up near the border (any side) with our Scouts. Americans will bring a stockpile of Kraft Mac and cheese from Wisconsin/Missouri (which I recently learned is a Canadian staple) and the Canadians can bring down some Tim Hortons or poutine.

Poutine all the way! The good stuff, not those chain restaurant poutines ?

I will get you some from Montreal … a good way to test the range as well ? and we may have to heat it up using the cars 110v outlet ?
Best poutine I had in Quebec (Ile d’ Orleans) was duck confit with mushrooms, truffle and black garlic and it changed my life. I will order poutine anytime I see it and it looks good but that particular stop ruined me a bit for life ?

Because of the new steel/aluminum tariffs. Majority of our steel/aluminum doesn’t come from US. -but rather the countries the new tariffs are being applied to. Getting US plants back up and running or created along with increased power/electricity to run plants (huge requirements) will take close to 3 years to get up and running. Hydro power is a big source of electricity in the countries making most steel/aluminum and we don’t have those infrastructures in place.
You figure what-75% of a vehicle is made from steel/aluminum
Those increases seem in line based on current vehicle costs
Bingo. Happened last time too with steel tariffs. Many of my suppliers introduced steel surcharges that just kept going up. When that ended the surcharge went away but the price never went back down. It’s like Deja vu all over again.

Mercedes Benz uses them. And they seem to work fine for Mercedes.

The tariffs aren’t for no reason. The Canadians being you! Had debts to the USA, so pay up. That’s why he implemented tariffs. And the tariffs aren’t to make it be that we stop buying your Canadian products putting companies out of business as pay back. Bringing American Manufacturing BACK.
