Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. I had a few thoughts I wanted to share with Scout and the community.

1. Have a collaboration with Dixxon flannel company! To those that don't know, they make limited ed. flannels/patterns and frequently partner with companies/celebrities/bands etc.. I sent this idea to the Scout Motors Facebook marketing group a while ago, but just thought I'd also post it here too. FYI - Dixxon just came out with a limited edition Indian motorcycles 125 anniversary flannel today.

2. If Scout Motors vehicles are required to make that EV "whirring" noise while driving, can it be kept to a minimum volume? EV cars driving by my house are louder than ICE vehicles! I should not be able to hear an EV whirring by while inside my house, when I can't hear an ICE motor in the same conditions. Maybe it's just certain EV's that are exceptionally loud, but definitely gets a check in the negative column when deciding on a next vehicle. Maybe make a shirt that says "Loud Whirring Saves Lives" :D

In conclusion, partner with Dixxon Flannel, and no whirring for the win!

Welcome to the community! I just went and looked up Dixon. That would be a great idea. Especially if we could get a flannel in SM blue and orange. Love it.

As for the noise an EV makes, it’s required by law. They are for sure going to make noise so pedestrians can hear our Scouts. No getting around that.

This is such a strange mandate. There are countless combustion engine vehicles these days that are near silent in parking lots and then you have the electric vehicles emitting loud noises anytime they’re moving about at slow speeds. There are a lot of automobile mandates and laws that are not grounded in reality though.

Not exactly my style, but I get it and why many would like it. I agree that there is a wide variety when it comes to EV sounds. I actually find Hyundais to be loud and ironically Honda CRV hybrids are really loud.

The actual law says something to the effect of "if a vehicle is moving without a combustion engine running, it needs to make noise of this volume under this speed". And its been that way since like ~2021 or so. Its because at low speeds, vehicles without engines running are quite hard to hear in parking lots/around pedestrians. So to help people know where they are, they've got to make noise.

Which is why Hybrids, PHEVs, and Electric vehicles all need the sound (including while backing up).

And yes, its usually a speaker at the front of the vehicle (or another one on the back). And yes, those speakers can come unplugged if you drive over a rough road. I've also read on the internet about people who put felt/other stuff over them to make them a bit quieter. But I'd imagine that wouldn't go over well in a lawsuit (that the sound thing had been tampered with).

I'd love a fun low speed noise for the scout. Something like Thunder, or a fireplace crackling :D.

ALL Hondas are loud. Even my Accord. I liken it to being surrounded by angels humming prayers as I’m whisked off to the clouds. And in an urban environment-OMG it’s ridiculous. Always have people looking at me

I guess that’s the point. But, you’re right it’s like whatever scene in a show or movie that angels appear! Nearly the same sound.
 
To clarify about EV whirring; I'm ok with EV"s making some noise. I get it.. But when they are louder than ICE vehicles, that's a problem. Pretty sure it's the Chevy Equinox that's super loud. #shrugs. Just saying I hope Scout pays attention to that sort of thing, vs. the big three not getting it.
I want to replace the whirring with a buzzing bumble bee sound on the Bumble Bee.

:p I wonder how much of the entire CFR is not grounded in reality.

For reference on the Dixxon flannel idea.. They released the Indian Motorcycles flannel yesterday, I checked this morning and it's already sold out. There's a huge cult following with them. Several Facebook groups where people sell/trade them. I myself have about 15 Dixxon Flannels :D They are very popular, and based out of Tempe Arizona.

The whirring. It definitely seems to be certain EV cars that are excessively loud, but still unsure which ones. I'm going to try to pay attention to figure out which EV's seem louder than others.
 
The whirring is obnoxious and I truly believe it was designed to make EVs louder than combustion vehicles in a ridiculous attempt to en$#!tify them a bit to try and slow their adoption or something. I particularly hate the Toyota implementation as it's unnecessarily loud for some reason to the point of being obnoxious. My street gets used by driving schools a lot and one of the schools uses a Prius, I could hear the damn thing from my backyard! I even went to the front to see what was going on and it was just a dumb Prius learning to parallel park...for and hour.

As far as I'm concerned the onus should be on the driver to not hit pedestrians when driving at low speed, not the other way around. The argument is always "the cars need to be loud enough for pedestrians - particularly the blind - to hear the vehicle approaching so they don't get run over."

Here's a thought, if you're driving in an area where pedestrians might get run over I would suggest that maybe the responsibility of avoiding the running over should be on the drivers of the heavy machines and not the random defenceless blind person just trying to go about their day.

It's just another implicit way of putting cars above humans and making society more car centric than it needs to be.

And before anyone says "yeah but kids do unpredictable things!" yeah, exactly. A dumb obnoxious whirring sound isn't going to prevent a kid from running after a ball. We all know this. The responsibility should lie with the person operating the 2-tonne vehicle.

Experience from my EV as someone who has the unfortunate of spending a lot of time in various parking lot most pedestrians don’t care when they hear the sound or they’re just to oblivious to hear it unless it’s the sound of a straight pipe truck. However, there have also been many people that like to walk behind my vehicle when I’m trying to back out of a spot and the only thing that gets them to move, isn’t my reverse lights, but the sound of the pedestrian warning noise but that’s only about 10% of the time most time people don’t care and they will just walk in front of you. Though I can also say that there are times where even when being cautious, you might not see a pedestrian I’ve had way too many people disappear behind my a pillar and just barely avoid my site for almost too long.

Agreed, and in those cases where you almost hit people for whatever reason I would suggest an ADAS system would be more effective than a dumb sound that just ads to noise pollution in cities that most people ignore anyway.
