Another Option for an Electric Scout

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
I could laugh, my LJ already only has a 160 mile range. But honestly, while it is partially my fault, my LJ is loud as hell - and almost none of that is engine noise. A loud EV would seem to be missing the point.

My LJ is loud because of Covid tires (there were limited tire options available during covid for 15" rims). I feel like I chose poorly. But I don't put a ton of miles on the LJ, so it would feel like just throwing away new tires yet at this point - and honestly have considered it more than a few times. That said, the LJ is currently dead. Shop is trying to find parts, and it is looking like the fastest parts may be a month out.

What tires and gearing do you have? I get over 200 miles per tank in my LJ. Stock Rubicon gearing with metric 35s.

And what died? Honestly parts availability is one of the main reasons I've been considering the EV conversion. This 6 speed seems to be a problem.

Instrument cluster. Runs fine, but I have no warning lights, no gauges. Kind of scary to drive with no temp guage, no odometer, no fuel gauge... I can at least use my iphone for speed. Honestly - I could just use the ODM for most of it, just annoying I guess. Tape an ipad to the dash... In all honesty - I have an android tablet somewhere on the desk in front of me purchased just for extra gauges in the LJ...

Tires are Mud Terrains. So what should I expect. But honestly have KM3 on my Tacoma and they were not loud at all - but the Mitchey Thomas MT's are brutal.

It's been re-geared to the max I can without changing the front axle. It has the same effective gear ratio as stock (given that stock was 28" IIRC, and I have 33's on it now (IIRC, maybe 32's). Anyway, did the math on the effective gear ratio - rpm to tire circumference inch. With the flat 6, it just has no power. I also have a roof rack adding a bit of noise and wind resistance. But honestly, while it will easily cruise at 85mph on the interstate (LJ's are a lot more stable than TJ's), the enjoyment factor falls off fast after 65mph due to noise - and honestly prefer to just putter at 55mph (which was the speed limit when it was made).
