Re-think Headlight Design

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

I'm not a huge fan of the 4 array headlight design, looks too similar to the ones Porsche uses. Also kinda looks like a merge of the Porsche and Bronco lights. IMO, its not actually that distinctive/iconic.

I do really like how the DRL blends into the side/parking light and the light bar that wraps around the front/rear grille. Very distinctive.

More than that, I'm concerned about how they are inset and there is a "ledge" in front of each light. This is going to accumulate snow and cover the light. LEDs don't generate much heat so its going to melt off. This being an adventure vehicle, a lot folks who live in and travel to places where it snows are not going to be happy about this.

I'd recommend making the headlights flush so there is no ledge, having a heating element or maybe a washer (though this will be least effective).

    Update:
Case study - Cybertruck with this issue. Scout, hope you’ve got a plan to accout for this: https://www.autoevolution.com/news/...cumulate-and-block-the-headlights-230818.html

    Agree. This is a problem.

Our design team went through a lot of variations getting to this point. Given that the Scout II was the main inspiration for the Traveler and that the Scout II had different grill and/or headlamp treatments almost every model year, it is tough to get agreement among Scout enthusiasts which front end is the best. I personally think we would have been slammed for copying the current Bronco if we did round headlamps. The 1980 Scout had rectangular headlamps and the Scout III sketches show quad rectangular headlamps. You can see how quickly this goes in circles (no pun intended!) when trying to debate what direction to go.

    Did somebody say Scout III?

I'm a bit lost how this vertical Dyson-esque headlamp:

    looks like this rounded rectangle:

I'm totally open for debate, but I don't see a similarity. I suspect if we had put round headlamps in the front end we would have been labeled as copying the Ford Bronco (even though the original Scout was on the market five years before the Bronco).
That’s fricking Hilarious! Dyson esque headlamps. I don’t think I can look at a Rivian no with out thinking about this now. Thanks Jamie 🙄

Can we see the Scout III SSV drawing? Or is it privately kept?

I agree with the headlight concerns. Hyundai has already capitalized on the Porsche look, and it was never tough enough for a Scout. Go hi tech but round - retro modern and aggressive. Maybe a big circle and a second slightly smaller adjacent or overlapping one for high beams or fog. Or satisfy your rectangle and round fans at the same time by using rectangle shape overall (nice nod to the 90s Land Cruiser) with inset circles.

Scout is tougher than both Porsche and Hyundai and it doesn’t look like either of them. Scout designers don’t listen to these fools. I think when the Binoculars come out and match the design it will all make sense to them.

And they will have a nice symbolic meaning binoculars make you see farther away and so do headlights in the dark.

Agree. I’m tired of the round retro lights on all the classic SUVs-Jeep, Bronco, defender, g-wagon. It’s been said the vehicle isn’t retro it’s evolutionary. Having seen it in person the idea of round lights just wouldn’t do it justice. I’m sure some company will make round aftermarket lights and those who want to ruin the beautiful design of the Scout can pay a coupe grand and replace them. That’s the joy of aftermarket-even if it shouldn’t be an option

My firsts posts on this forum I went on a rant about the headlights not being round (retro). After settling in on this forum and better understanding the evolution and also just loving the entire looks of the Scout, I deleted those posts and came away from the "dark side". I am truly bought in on the whole body style! SM...PLEASE don't change it or at least just make small tweaks...I am no longer a fan of the round headlight idea.

Well thank you for this post. I think we all had some sort of preconceived notions as to how it “should look”. My issue was size. I freaked out it was “so big”, but thankfully didn’t cancel my reservation. Once I had a better understanding of the size and compared it to other vehicles I was fine and got on the forum and now I’m so excited about the Traveler. I’m all in!! And yes SM please don’t change anything big. I love it just the way it is!!

I will jump in with the group that supports "don't change or only minor tweaks" as long as you address the snow accumulation issue.
If they push out the headlight clear plastic, it will ruin the look of the Scouts IMO.

If they are to run some type of heating, then we run into the issues of condensation buildup in the housing, which these aren’t BMWs, they are Scouts.

I would think two heat wires running in the lense housing may be enough, not damage the plastic and solve for the mucked up snow covered lense housings. At the rate we are going only the top northern most states will even see snow

Or they can make small holes on the inside of the hosing that pushes out hot air. Like, how a windshield is defrosted.

Also i don’t know what your winter was like, but this winter was actually more eventful by me than years prior. And us beach people never see snow since the ocean keeps the air temp slightly warmer and it kills off the storms 85% of the time.
