  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

Shopping for a “new” BEV while waiting for the Scout Traveler BEV.

I have a public talk, “Cars on Mars,” that I’ve given to many different groups. One of the things I do is compare the distance the rovers have (had) traveled with the original requirement. I’ve often been asked, “why doesn’t JPL make cars for Earth?” Well, because the Martian rovers aren’t...

Shopping for a “new” BEV while waiting for the Scout Traveler BEV.

Every NASA center used to have at least one large public event every year. I think a lot of those (all???) were canceled after 20 January 2025.

I haven’t tested it recently, but the Ford app now allows setting charge times slightly differently than it used to and it *seems* like it can span the 24:00 time slot. But, like I say, I haven’t had an occasion to test it. If you get an Emporia EVSE with the solar monitoring upgrade, you can...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

Quick review of this pop-up camper trailer. This is a used 2021 Rockwood 1910 ESP (“Extreme Sports Package”) camper. It has “upgraded, off-road” suspension, which really just means the spring/axle mounts are on top of the axle instead of below, and it has silly-looking, 15-in “AT” tires on it...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

We sold our previous camping trailer a couple of years before we got the Lightning. We've been tent camping since. But we're going on a long summer vacation trip this late summer, so wanted to get another camper. We found one that's nearly perfect 600 miles (round trip) from home and my...

Why I'm Cancelling My R2 Reservation

But it doesn't make sense that things happen in time-specific order! Why can't we have production vehicles to sit in before they have produced any vehicles? I want my Scout before they build it!

    Hey Lady Scouts!!

If I don’t have allweather, liquid-catching (with a rim) mats, the carpet gets destroyed. Pretty is no good to me if the pretty is destroyed by use. I would install mud&snow mats.

If Toyota released a Rav4 Pickup BEV, my partner would buy it. And I’d drive it at least as often as I drive the Lightning. A 1989 Toyota Pickup sized BEV pickup would be ideal for the kind of ranch, farm, and etc work I do. The Lightning is too big and has too small of a bed, but I use it to...

    Route 66 Centennial Road Trip

With a tongue weight of 500 pounds, your trailer is at the maximum your truck (any non-HD truck) can safely tow without a WDH. If you load the trailer carefully, you'll likely stay below 500 pounds tongue weight. Once you've loaded it the way you want it, take it to a scale and ask them to get...

    R2 Launch Watch

It all depends on what you mean by "superior." Some would consider a solid rear axle to be superior to independent rear suspension. Some would argue the opposite. They're both right, depending on the use case. Some would argue that a locking diff is superior to the computerized magic Rivian...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

Actual trip report: We will be at a memorial for a colleague and mentor this evening. So we left home to come down off the mountain, climb back up the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, then back down into St. George, UT. Total distance of 269 miles. We stopped for lunch at Jacob Lake. They don't...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

On a road trip today, we got 31 miles/kWh over a distance of about 50 miles. If it were possible to get that over an entire battery charge (not likely), it would be 131 kWh * 31 miles/kWh = just over 4,000 miles. That is obviously not what I'm claiming the truck can get. I'm sure some troll is...

    R2 Launch Watch

We're considering a lease on the R2. We're considering a used R1S. We're looking at a few other vehicles. My review thread is stalled as we manage a busy month of weekends. The Traveler is still a compelling BEV so whatever we do now will leave open the option to buy/lease a Traveler when our...

The Garage (What did you work on today?)

Installing a new-to-us used hoophouse/greenhouse. It’s nowhere near done and we had an unplanned and unwanted trip come up this weekend, so it won’t be completed this weekend either. Hoping to have it done before next weekend.

There are several specific approaches. They all behave basically the same way, which is also the same way a whole-home grid-tie or hybrid inverter operates, but at much lower amperage. There’s a microinverter between the panel and the plug. That microinverter has a small circuit “on the grid...

GM to pay $12.75 million to settle California driver privacy probe I’m sure every other data collector is doing illegal, unethical things with our data. Heck, we know our Social Security numbers were stolen last year. It’s nice that someone is paying for their theft, but it seems such a small...

Shopping for a “new” BEV while waiting for the Scout Traveler BEV.

Yeah, no. It’s not worth asking about every vehicle. We’re trying to independently verify specifications on a bunch of vehicles so we can compare them. Asking the sellers of all of those vehicles would be a waste of time and energy. It should just be available via a simple database search.

Include a Monroney Sticker and Build Sheet

The Monroney Sticker is the same thing as the Window Sticker. I belive they’re required to be attached to the vehicle, so it’s likely that they will be included. IMO, the database is essential for buying a used car. I have never bought a used car if I couldn’t get the Monroney Sticker. These...

Shopping for a “new” BEV while waiting for the Scout Traveler BEV.

I haven’t seen a single Window Sticker / Monroney sticker with any of the used Rivians we’ve looked at. Just some sellers include a photo of the digital approximation from somewhere in the menu on the main screen. And I can’t find anything on Rivian’s site to look up a vehicle’s details based...
