1973 Scout II
Tell us about your Scout:
It came to me following his passing in 1984. It only had 22k miles at the time. It was fully minimalist stock - no air, no power steering, no power breaks, no lift kit, skinny tires with the ‘dog dish’ hubcaps. In the’80s and ‘90s I made both of my sons drive it when they were in high school. They affectionately referred to the color as ‘puke green’.
After they were out of the house I did a mild resto-mod. Power steering and brakes, lift kit, bigger tires, American Racing wheels, dual exhaust and most recently, an electronic module to replace the rotor, a high output coil and FireWire plug wires.
It was reupholstered in 2010 and repainted (the original Ceylon Mist green) in 2022. Current mileage 92k. Now my grandsons, Ed’s great grandsons are lobbying who will get to be the next ‘custodian’ of the Scout for the next generation. I also have a 2000 Porsche 911 Carrera. I recently asked my 14 year old grandson which of the two vehicles he would choose. He responded immediately ‘the Scout of course. You can get a Porsche anywhere. But where are you going to find a Scout, especially one with our family history?’ I think he has a leg up on his brother for being the next custodian.
That’s what makes OUR Scout more than just a neat vehicle. It carries part of our family legacy into the future. ‘Anything else is just a car.’
