Long Way...

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

If you haven't seen Long Way Up with Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman, it's a fun, 15,000 mile trip from the southern tip of South America (Ushuaia, Argentina) to Los Angeles, CA. It was filmed in 2019. They ride Harley Davidson Live Wire electric motorcycles (prototypes). In addition to the main vehicles being electric, two of their support vehicles are the very first Rivian R1Ts off the production line (a couple years before any other other Rivians rolled off the production line).

If you worry about what Scout will be able to do, watch this show and remember that it was filmed almost ten years before the Scouts will be out. A whole lot of experience is going to inform Scout Motors. I'm excited to see what Scout can do!

Quick clarification on being "production". These vehicles (while technically given Rivian's first actual VIN numbers) were more like prototypes, and had certain components that were assembled by hand (not by a machine or welded by a robot). The UI was not complete, in fact the entire infotainment system was not really production ready at this stage. Basically, there were a LOT of changes that occurred between the filming of the Long Way Up and the true rollout on the assembly line over those years in between (HW, SW, componentry). I have to believe that this adventure informed a lot of the final production changes that got locked-in. Great video and some incredible people and scenery. This video boosted my confidence in the truck and the brand and the people behind the logo (and was one of the reasons why I ordered a R1T in 2019).

Thanks for the clarification! My husband just turned it on. Maybe this will help him get on the all electric bandwagon. I’m kinda there already. I’m 70/30 in favor of all electric now. I’ve tipped over 50/50.

I love the point that SpaceEVDriver made about these new Scout's launching almost a decade FOLLOWING the filming of the Long Way Up. A decade is a long time since the long way. In the relatively short period of time that I have owned my truck (took delivery in May of '22) that the truck continues to get better with OTA's and small adjustments to things like suspension, drive modes, battery/BMS SW enhancements, etc and features. Its almost like a living breathing thing when your truck is "connected" and can evolve. Lots of credit to Rivian, and this will be a great partnership for Scout to leverage and speed time to market.

Thanks for the clarification, @R1TVT, I meant to add a bit about that and got distracted.

The beginning of the trip is fraught with a LOT of learning in a very short time. It might start people off with the idea that it's an anti-EV series, but they persevere, learn a lot, and make it. Also, they're often traveling through an area without any infrastructure.

They also perform field repairs, just like on their other trips.

And it's with prototype vehicles on a trip that even manufacturers wouldn't have taken.

I watched this on Apple TV+ several years ago just for the cool electric Harley-Davidsons. I must admit I missed the significance of electric powered vehicles. It was however a great series.

I remember watching this years ago and thought Rivian was crazy to throw prototype hardware and software into a grueling very public series. Kudos to their team.
The Pan American Highway is like the standard shake-down run now, right? You're going to take a few Scout pre-production vehicles, or the first productions, from Alaska to South Carolina and film it as an advertisement for their capabilities, right?
Right? ;)

Oh, and this was the prototype Rivian's UI. Not because they were considering this for the final vehicles but because they hadn't come close to finishing their real UI before the vehicles had to be shipped.

Definitely a prototype. The big red STOP button is the tell.

wow have Rivian's come along way, the big, beautiful stop/kill button for emergencies. I think I like the center console of this Rivian than the final version, it has a whole array for physical button.

I'd prefer something in between and less exposed to spills and other issues. IMO, rarely used functions don't need to be part of a physical array like this.
