  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    Travelall 3 Row

I was one of 8 kids in my home growing up. We used the following vehicles for carting all of us around: Flatbed 2-ton Chevy C-60. The kids rode on the flatbed. Yes, fully flat, no sidewalls. Chevy Suburban Two Scout IIs. Converted the rear cargo areas to seats. Two Chevy Chevettes. Yeah, we...

    Charging while driving…Wild, irresponsible speculation...

I’m curious about what your need would be if you went with BEV + solar. How many days would you be out? How much additional range would you need? What part of the world would this be happening? Would a trailer with some PV+battery be an option?

Taking the other side of my WAG: One thing that protects Scout that hasn’t protected Rivian and others is that they’re not publicly traded, so they don’t have to answer to demanding stockholders who don’t really know anything except what’s happening to their dividends. That, alone, allows them...

But Toyota has been developing Hybrids for more than a quarter century. They don’t have to fund much when it comes to integration development. So their R&D cost for hybrid vs non-hybrid is, essentially, $0 and the premium price on the hybrid is for parts, labor, and profit. A new design, like...

    Charging while driving…Wild, irresponsible speculation...

I have to admit it’s a WAG. To me, $10k seems to be the mark in distinguishing vehicle trims, etc these days. The hybrid vs non-hybrid for non-lifestyle gas vehicles seems to be around $2500 (I have not done an analysis of the actual price differences). For the higher-end, hybrids can sell for...

These estimates assume 100% peak power 100% of the time. That’s not a good way to run an ICE. At 70 mph, trucks the size of the Terra that are not towing draw approximately 2 miles/kWh. Some people can get better, many get worse. While towing or elevation climbs, the efficiency is about 1...

    Charging while driving…Wild, irresponsible speculation...

If the engine is designed well for its use as a genset engine, it will run at essentially one small RPM range for peak efficiency. The 23 mpg isn’t really the appropriate measure (because the engine isn’t directly fighting drag). But it’s the only real measure of efficiency we have for ICEs...

Not if they’re running 70 mph the entire time, which was the presumption in the interview.

Yeah, I hope Scout doesn’t do any development on a trailer like this—I’m a huge proponent of letting the experts do the thing they’re expert at, and I want Scout’s expertise to be developing and building a fantastic EV. The key to being able to use this setup in-flight, as it were, is that Scout...

    Charging while driving…Wild, irresponsible speculation...

If they’re planning to run the Harvester at peak power and 100% duty cycle for 350 miles (5 hours), they’re going to end up with a lot of blown engines.

    Charging while driving…Wild, irresponsible speculation...

The 70 mph range test of similar vehicles (the Lightning), for example, net about 2 miles/kWh in good conditions. That's an average 35 kW draw from the battery. You don't run a genset engine at peak power for 5 hours. You want a ~20% duty cycle for peak power or you "oversize" the engine by a...

    Charging while driving…Wild, irresponsible speculation...

A 32 kWh battery would not take up much space or trailer load and would add ~25% range to a 131 kWh main battery (for ~400 miles total range in the Lightning). Trailering would cut range by about 30-60%, depending on the height, width, and length of the trailer. I wouldn't do this with a large...

    Charging while driving…Wild, irresponsible speculation...

I'm skeptical the Harvester will reach steady state at 70 mph. Maybe 60 mph on the flats. There's no chance it'll do it while towing a travel trailer or going uphill.

I watch copart, and they are showing up relatively undamaged because any damage is basically non-reparable so the cost to repair is more than the vehicle is worth… I just need to find one within a reasonable distance and for a reasonable cost (some are lower than $10k, but copart has a lot of...

    Charging while driving…Wild, irresponsible speculation...

A park-and-charge option is actually pretty easy for DIYers today. One can get a new 32kWh LiFePO4 (LFP) battery pack for about $5500. An high-voltage DC / solar inverter (240V AC) for about $1500. An L2 charger for $600. The trailer can be charged via the grid input on the inverter: A 30A...

    Charging while driving…Wild, irresponsible speculation...

That’s precisely my feeling too. I know of several people who run a 30A cable from the back of the Lightning to their trailer so they can keep their travel trailer powered while on the road. I no longer have a travel trailer, in part because I don’t enjoy towing them (even with gas tow...

    Harvester towing

You joke… When I was a kid going on trips across the Mojave Desert, we would carry several 5-gallon gas cans in the trunk of the car (with direct air circulation with the passenger cabin) because 24-hr gas stations didn’t exist and we had to travel at night to avoid overheating… Fun times.

A counterpoint to Rivian’s OTA success is the bankruptcy of Fisker. Owners have been scrambling to figure out how to fix their software issues since Fisker went under. I’m still waiting for a Fisker Ocean to be available at under $10k so I can steal its battery for my own purposes.
