  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

Well, I just added up the cost of charging for our ~1600 mile road trip from northern AZ, through northeastern AZ, southern and eastern Utah, through the Rockies to Boulder, CO, and then through the Rockies and back to southwestern CO and across the northeastern AZ desert back home. For about...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

We're looking to the Traveler or a used Gravity (assuming they have dramatic depreciation) to replace the Mustang. I like the terra cotta / Tahitian Red, but would probably go with a sandy color for practical reasons.

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

We’re not going to do yellow, but here’s a PBY for you.

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

We prefer the sandstone. Either semi-gloss or matte. Now I have to go teach a couple of workshops to get the funds to pay for the wrap...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

It has a entry/exit “squat” mode when parked. There’s also a true “low rider” setting as an “easter egg” (it's mentioned in the manual, but nobody reads the manual anymore).

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

I’m about 50% leaning toward a terra cotta / sandstone / burnt umber wrap for the truck. The heat this thing collects is too much.

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

And they’re not even “looks” tires…just good tires for heavy EVs. Low noise, low rolling resistance, high load.

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

I just replaced the 24” wheels and 35” tires with 18” wheels and 33” tires. Specifically, I got a set of four Bridgestone Alenza A/S 02 LT265/70R18 on closeout for $129 each. These are AS tires, not AT tires. I don’t usually run AT tires unless I am planning a long trip offroad. These tires...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

We left Durango with 88% state of charge and arrived home with 23% state of charge. That’s 65% or 133 kWh for a 320 mile drive, so about 2.4 miles/kWh. We stopped for a restroom break, but weren’t feeling especially hungry, so did not stay for a meal. And we didn’t charge. And now we’re more...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

We charged to 100% overnight in Breckenridge. Then drove 320 miles through the mountains to just a bit south of Durango. The overall elevation loss was not insignificant (about 9700 feet to about 6500 feet). But there were a lot of climbs in between. Speeds were generally limited to 50 mph or...

I wish reporters would correct the facts from these press releases. These are quasi- or semi-solid state batteries. They still use liquid electrolytes.

Is there anything SM could offer to get you to switch from EREV to BEV?

Plugshare is the easiest app to use to filter for fast chargers near dining, but its map is only good for a couple hundred stations at a time, so you have to zoom in pretty tightly to get an accurate picture of what's really available.

Is there anything SM could offer to get you to switch from EREV to BEV?

I'm not sure where you are in the world. The only region of the country with worse charger density than where we live and road trip is the sort of northwestern Midwest (WY, MT, ND, SD, NE) region. We're hoping to make a road trip through WY, and MT this summer, towing a trailer. I'll be sure to...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

Drove around Boulder for work for the past several days. Never really needed to charge, but we did some opportunistic cheering in a couple of places. Parking + charging costs are pretty high, so we didn't put too much effort into charging. And we didn't need to with 63% battery. We had plenty of...

Is there anything SM could offer to get you to switch from EREV to BEV?

On the regular 1200 mile round trip route we take almost every month, we see exactly zero time difference between when we drove it with a gassy vehicle and now with an EV. We stop for lunch and then for dinner and at each of those stops we charge. The charge is done before we are finished with...

We own EVs. Ask Us Anything.

We plug in pretty much every day. We have the vehicles limited to 85% (Mustang) and 95% (truck). But if we need to go somewhere far, it's nice to have the vehicle already plugged in so we can use the app to tell the vehicle to charge up to 100%.

Rechargeable. Seriously. There are issues with the chemistry, efficiency, and density right now, which is why CATL is spending money on long-term research. If they can solve those issues, the theoretical specific energy is about 12 kWh/kg. That's about the same specific energy of gasoline...

Meantime, CATL already has sodium-ion batteries in some vehicles and is spinning up mass production. It's turned its long-term research arm from SSBs (which are in its production pilot phase) toward 12 kWh/kg Li-O2 battery research, which will drop the mass of a 212 kWh battery (493 miles in the...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

Quite a bit. Some notes in general, more to come: A larger battery can be problematic while charging if the driver thinks about state of charge rather than range. A massive battery charging on a Supercharger or otherwise slower charge station can take a much longer time to increase in state...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

We drove from Moab to Boulder today. Total distance is 375 miles. We started with 100% state of charge from charging on the hotel Level 2 overnight. We drove from the hotel in Moab 200 miles to Glenwood Springs, CO. We were going to charge on the 350 kW Electrify America chargers there so we...
