  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

    Extra, Extra....Read All About It!

Over on the Lightning forum, an owner’s truck was in an accident and they expect to have to get a new truck. So, of course, the question is which truck would “you” get to replace a wrecked Lightning. This is a heavily biased sampling, of course. People on forums can never be a representative...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

If someone wants to double-check my math and/or give me better guesses for efficiency of the Harvester, I’m totally open to it, of course. I did check my estimates against @Logan’s and if you extend Logan's math to 15,000 miles, we get similar results.

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

If the Scout were only used for that commute, this is the better way to estimate it. One caveat is that the Harvester *will* run sometimes. It needs to run to maintain its health, so there will be a slight extra cost of fuel even if the vehicle never goes far enough to “need” the engine.

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

$0.74/mile for the F-150. The Harvester will be going 500 miles per tank, 150 on electricity and 350 on gas. You stated your electricity is $0.16/kWh. Let’s assume a 2.4 miles/kWh average like the Lightning and maybe something equivalent to 30 mpg for the gasoline engine. 150 miles / 2.4...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

Yep. I think we talked about this in another thread. I have a spreadsheet that runs up to a million scenarios to model as many possible scenarios as I can. I recently ran it for someone who lives in Seattle considering two very different vehicles: A $55k Subaru Outback ICE or a $116k Rivian...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

Assuming no road trips and prices stay the same... $200 saved per 2170 miles. When you get to 75,000 miles: $200 * (75,000/2170) = $6,912.44

They may be including the huge discounts on used Teslas since nobody’s buying them. ;)

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

A more true estimate would be closer to $15-$20k in savings, but I don’t have the receipts at my fingertips.

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

Note that I’ve been very generous to the ICE calculations here: We had a Golf Alltrack before the Mustang and it got 22 mpg. I assumed low gas prices. We have had a LOT of free DCFC or other very cheap road trip charging; it’s only in the past nine months or so that the prices of DCFC have...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

I haven’t tracked every fill-up for gas in a long, long time, and I’ve stopped paying attention to the cost of gas, so I can only estimate. I estimate that we’ve done about 50% road trips and 50% local driving, but I’m not certain of that—I’d have to go back through my logs. This is not...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

It won’t be six weeks of vacation. It’ll be 2 weeks of 50-75% working, 2 weeks of full-time working, and no more than 2 weeks of truly time-off vacation.

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

After so many road trips, none of the EV-related aspects give me anxiety. There are so many charging stations along this route that we have backups for the backups. And we’ll be starting every travel day at 100%. The flexibility we’ll be planning (half-day of travel many days) means if anything...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

We’ve been to Chicago and love the city and are eagerly looking to go back. I’ve been to St. Louis, but didn’t have a chance to explore the city. We’re not sure when we’re going to go. It’s a long drive and would require some vacation time. And we would be meeting people along the way so we...

What's it like to take a road trip in a truck like the Terra (F-150 Lightning)?

We’re considering a 5500 mile trip that would to take us from northern AZ to Seattle, Vancouver, Banff, Calgary, Winnipeg, Minneapolis, Chicago, St. Louis, Oklahoma City, Albuquerque, and back to Northern Arizona. While in the US, we would likely drive for 4-6 hours and then stop to do half a...

    Plug in hybrid.

Agreed. I’m glad Scout’s taking advantage of those options. It gives me confidence that for the BEV there will have been similar exploration of options that might have been left on the table by another company or other team of engineers who are used to doing things a particular way. It’s good...

    Plug in hybrid.

Fantastic. Not all plug-in hybrids will allow running on pure EV without fuel. I'm happy to hear Scout is planning for this kind of possibility.

59 Months (and counting) of EV driving...

I grew up with only junkers (literally only had vehicles that we restored from junkyards). So walking long distances because of a breakdown, running out of fuel, or whatever is something I have a lot of experience with. I haven't had such an issue in more that 2 decades, but it's not a prospect...

59 Months (and counting) of EV driving...

We’ve been running the Mustang’s battery down without recharging for our semi-annual, not-in-the-manual, probably only somewhat important Battery Management System recondition. Lithium batteries don’t have “memory” the way old lead-acid batteries did. But new technology to track the state of...
